Diagnose before you buy parts
Order of operations matters. Controller and rain sensor first, then the valve box, then heads with water on, then a shovel. Skipping steps is how people replace nozzles when the solenoid is open, or trench for a “root problem” when station 4 is dead at the clock.
- Dig a clean circle, do not yank the pipe.
- Add a nipple or swing joint so the body sits at grade after backfill, not perched on a mound.
- Set the body plumb. A tilted head waters the sky on one side and the can on the other.
- Compact so the next irrigation cycle does not sink it again.
- Match the nozzle. A sunken head often got replaced with the wrong throw already.
